Knowledge removes all obstacles. Experience creates them. Perhaps we will find that in the pattern of the problems will be found the knowledge that is forever frustrated by hasty solutions. The fragmentariness of personal experience creates problems at an accelerating rate. Knowledge simply by-passes problems and allows them to wilt into insignificance. Points of view create confrontations and clashes, while knowledge generates love and charity that cover all faults and failings.

For applied knowledge, whether in military structure or industrial organization, depends upon uniformity and homogenization of populations. βIt is certain,β wrote the symbolist Edgar Allan Poe, βthat the mere act of inditing tends in a great degree to the logicalization of thought.β Lineal, alphabetic inditing made possible the sudden invention of βgrammarsβ of thought and science by the Greeks. These grammars or explicit spellings out of personal and social processes were visualizations of non-visual functions and relations. The functions and processes were not new. But the means of arrested visual analysis, namely the phonetic alphabet, was as new to the Greeks as the movie camera in our century.

βSocial Impact of the Computerβ, 1979 typescript
