Everybody is familiar with Eliot's magical theories of art and communication, which he shares with Coleridge and many others. If the health of letters in the Western world depends on the conceptual, rationalist tradition in opposition to the magical poetics, then why not say so? Why impugn the products of "magical" poets when it is their theory that is repugnant?
