New man-made environments are, as it were, formal causes that operate simultaneously on all levels. We respond to such causes infallibly and unconsciously. Consciousness, on the contrary, is a specialist and fragmentary operation which works by exclusion rather than inclusion. The subconscious by contrast is inclusive rather than exclusive. It accepts all things and all times and all places, and accents this all-at-once.
