The great thing about civilized values is they don’t involve a man. They leave him detached and uninvolved. Electric circuitry, starting a century or so ago, began to involve Western man as if he were an oriental. The West has gone profoundly oriental in the past century, has become much more involved in the process of life, and consciousness and unconsciousness, and the fact that it has upgraded Eastern values and downgraded Western values is entirely our doing.
