Joyce thinks of the world as fired point-blank at our senses and he uses the magazine idea in its original form as a store of explosive weapons, speaking of the “megascene where the maggies seen all.” The “maggies” are the Magi on one hand, and on the other hand they are the scrub-women who toil to clean the dirty linen of the public in an endless gossip session. Joyce reminds us that all forms of publication are a form of miming and replaying of events as a process of social catharsis and cleansing.
