Today we are very conscious of slang as a frontier of linguistic change and response to the new service environments created for our senses by electronic information. Even old forms like “dig,” “gutsy,” “groovy”, indicate a large shift from the “cat’s pyjamas” and “hot mamas”, and “I’ll tell da world” of the 1920’s. The twenties were going corporate and tribal fast enough under the huge speed-up of information movement by radio. But their slang is still visual and square (i.e., Euclidean) compared to the tactile, haptic, proprioceptive, and acoustic spaces and involvement of the slang of the TV age.
