Nevitt and I have done a paper on Causality in which we explain why effects always precede causes in the actual developmental order. Naturally, for the visual man, necessity means not only a chain of events, but a one-way sequence. The moment you flip out of that rut into awareness of environmental structures it becomes evident that cause and effect are not all of one type at one time. One student was talking about Freud’s work and pointed out that in Freud’s world it was the discovery that inputs do not match outputs (my old SI/SC) that resulted in everybody being neurotic.
