Gombrich traces some of the stages by which Western man arrived at the idea of “matching.” The idea that there might be some correspondence between inner and outer had no meaning until literacy came to shape awareness and to give dominance to our visual faculty. Almost to Newton’s time, the Western world assumed that the eye was the broadcasting center that actually made and projected rather than perceived the outer world.
