The conventional historian writing of "the impact of printing" has merely told us the amount of printing and the numbers of new books and readers. Such merely quantitative reporting is matching rather than making, and simply ignores what really happened. lnnis carefully avoids matching one cause against another effect and insists on making sense of the processes released by the new structures.
