All of the sleuths and master spies of fiction seem to have a charmed life based upon their powers of pattern recognition, a fact quite divergent from anything resembling common sense or ordinary responses to situations. Thus, the dropouts of our time may be conceived as seeking a means of survival unrelated to the conventional wisdom of the establishment.
