When sex – under the influence of Freid, factories, the automobile and world wars – came out into the open to become SEX, a peculiar thing happened: people were supposed to be free and frequent with their sexual activity. Women were supposed to turn from Victorian propriety to passionate responsiveness. And yet the basic ideals of maleness and femaleness continued unchanged. It was like a revolution without popular support: a lot of slogans, shouting and confusion, but not much revolution.
