This perhaps appears in the new criticism which is so unsympathetic to many of those trained in an earlier period of book culture. As a tool in the training of perception, the book, I think, has acquired a great new role in the past two decades. The unexplained popularity of highbrow paper-backs may be related to this complex situation.
