Indeed, with the advent of electric technology we have entered a relatively dim, unconscious world in which the extension of everybody’s nerves has involved them deeply in all other lives. And while this has threatened the sense of identity of many people, it has heightened the general awareness of the shape and meaning of lives and events to a level of extreme scrupulosity.
