Listening to a concert with an eminent psychologist, I happened to mention the highly tactile character of orchestral strings as compared with the other instruments. He seemed quite surprised and asked: “Do you mean that an auditory experience can have a tactile component?” Discussing the matter with him later, it became apparent that many psychologists assume not only is auditory experience merely auditory, but so with the other senses.
