It was I.A. Richards, I think, in his PRACTICAL CRITICISM, who was the first to demonstrate that poems are never read as they are by even highly trained literary experts. His PRACTICAL CRITICISM was a series of revelations about what people do when they actually read the stuff. They turn it into whatever happens to suit them.
