A PROBE, NOT A PACKAGE. Education on all levels has to move from packaging to probing, from the mere conveying of data to the experimental discovering of new dimensions of experience. The search will have to be for patterns of experience and discovery of principles of organization which have universal application, not for facts. An example of this, if you like, is the psychopathology of everyday life: every child now understands the patterns of the Freudian slip - this is a probe, not a package. In some circles this is called "mature learning", a learning for discovery rather than mechanical learning. This kind of learning, in the end, has nothing to do with an age level: there is nothing to stop small children from becoming very adept experimenters, graduate probers, explorers. It is the orientation of the society that matters, and our whole world, in shifting from the old mechanical forms to the new electronic feed-back forms, has already shifted from data packaging to probing of patterns.
