Black is not a color. It is the space between the colors in the spectrum. Perhaps this is why it is so much more involving than any of the colors because we feel a need to be in the spaces. The Negro countenance on color TV provides a powerful, sculptural icon, suitable to the non-photographic medium. The white face on color TV is weakened by chiaroscuro and light and shade which belong to the movie medium where the white man can still be a star.
