Each human being creates a kind of “space bubble” that he carries with him as his osmic mask. This hidden chemical vesture is enormously enhanced by the private motor car. It turns each of us into a kind of beetle with a steel carapace, or cover. Our attachment to this armour may well become more intense with crowding and noise, and may be one of the reasons for the common abhorrence of public transit.
