I systematically avoid concepts by sticking with percepts. Jokes are percepts, not concepts. We live in a world that is dominated by concepts or points of view, and the only way that I know of to hoick people out of their concepts into perceptual awareness, is by pulling the ground out from the figures. The symbolist poets practiced this procedure deliberately. It is sometimes involuntary, as when the little boy on his first aeroplane ride, asks his father: “Daddy, when do we start to get smaller?”
