If one looks at romantic landscape art as the use of the landscape to snapshot or arrest a state of mind, it is possible to say that the Symbolists deliberately fragmented these large pictorial structures in order to turn them into probes. It was a sort of chiasmus or reversal whereby what had become a wrap-around aesthetic became instead a means of exploration "to lose beauty and terror [,] and terror in inquisition"
