When, in 1896, Bernard Berenson wrote, "The painter can accomplish his task only by giving tactile values to retinal impressions," he was not only very much aboard the impressionist bandwagon, he was advocating the television image. Unlike the movie image, the mosaic mesh of the TV bombards the viewer with tactile values.
