It was Max Weber who introduced the new method [law of the situation] into history and the social sciences. In tackling any area of a subject he simply asked: "What is the main prop or factor in this entire situation without which there would be something else altogether?" It was a method taken over by Harold Innis for the study of Canadian politics and economics.
