The scriptures had had none of that uniform and homogeneous character during the
centuries before Gutenberg. It was, above all, the concept of homogeneity, which
typography fosters in every phase of human sensibility, that began to invade the arts, the sciences, industry, and politics from the sixteenth century forward.
