One of the many anecdotes that I had forgotten to include in my Lewis memoir is as follows: Lewis told me of being present at the first reading of The Waste Land to a small intimate group which included friends of Eliot and the first Mrs. Eliot. After the reading, a young chap with red splotches on his face spoke to Lewis aside, asking, “Do you think these red marks on my face might be called “carbuncular”? He seemed to think that he might be identified with the young man, “Carbuncular” in the typist episode of The Waste Land.
