Poets and painters invaded this inner landscape world [“le paysage intérieur”] long before Freud and Jung brought their cameras and notebooks to capture states of mind. Perhaps most spectacular of all was Claude Bernard, whose Introduction to the Study of Experimental Medicine ushered science into le milieu intérieur of the body exactly at the time when the poets did the same for the life of perception and feeling.
