Such national unity as Canada possesses is the result of an East West railway which was rushed into being by the government to prevent American infiltration of the Western territories. The enormously expensive and unprofitable railway system thus constructed was more of a political gesture than an economic speculation. It naturally led to the negotiation of trade agreements with England to foster East-West movements of goods to pay for the railways.
