The fixed position of the man habituated to eye-on-the-page was favorable to a segmental and sectional sense of space, the use of the eye as a geometrical rather than as a tactile organ. This attitude was explained and deplored by Bishop Berkeley in his "New Theory of Vision" in 1709. But the real crisis for the third dimension came with electricity and the telegraph, what de Chardin calls, in The Phenomenon of Man, "a prodigious biological event".
