The pursuit of “objectives” has been [Western civilized man’s] aim against all obstacles: the Western dream of conquest, one-upsmanship…With electricity, when we found the old kind of conquest too simple, we suddenly realized that it wasn’t a challenging goal after all. Now, when we can press a button and blow up the whole world, we realize that goals aren’t really compatible with community… So now we’re beginning to ask, but what’s the quality of life that goes with this easy conquest? What sort of human satisfactions are we developing in these conditions of endless rivalry? What sort of people do we want to be?
