A dictionary of Marshall McLuhan’s quotations

The audience acts as the environmental cliche and the players enact the metaphorical archetype of the wider situation. This is a form of that anti-environmentalism which was previously discussed as indispensable to any culture that seeks to avoid complete somnambulism. Such somnambulism is certainly not avoided by tribal man. Tribal societies have long been called "the people of the dream," precisely because they are locked in a collective awareness and avoid anti-environments rigorously.
